As we conclude the summer term, we are delighted to share our department’s highlights and achievements. Our recent ISI inspection brought fantastic news: we received glowing feedback! The inspectors praised our dedicated staff and hardworking pupils, highlighting the strength and commitment of our school community.
A huge thank-you goes out to all our staff for their relentless dedication this term. Their efforts have created a truly exceptional learning environment and provided the children with a plethora of enriching activities and excursions. We’ve enjoyed numerous school trips, an exhilarating sports day, competitive ISA and STEM competitions, career-focused trips, and memorable graduation ceremonies.
Congratulations to all our pupils on their outstanding achievements. We wish you a joyful and restful summer holiday and eagerly anticipate welcoming you back in September for another brilliant year ahead!

SCIENCE
We are thrilled to congratulate all our pupils on their outstanding progress in biology, chemistry, and physics this term! Despite tackling some challenging topics, they have demonstrated resilience and growth, particularly after their end-of-year assessments. We encourage our pupils to use this summer to reflect and prepare for an exciting new school year ahead.
A highlight of this term was our trip to Hope University with 12 Year 8 and 9 pupils for a STEM competition hosted by MCS Projects Ltd. Our pupils had an enriching experience learning about human health and first aid, delving into robotics, and even using the E-FIT program that police use to identify suspects. Their enthusiasm and curiosity were truly inspiring, and most importantly, they had a lot of fun!

Although we didn’t secure any winners for the British Science Week poster competition, the entries were impressive and showcased our pupils’ creativity and dedication. You can view the winning entries here. We look forward to participating again next year, so stay tuned!
We also celebrated the winners of our internal project competition themed “Time.” We were amazed by the brilliant contributions from pupils across different year groups. Special congratulations to Emily (3D), Jay (4M), James (4M), and William (7D) for winning top prizes, and to Hudson (Reception), Jaden (4M), Thomas (5M), and Freya (7S) for earning runners-up spots. The dedication and enthusiasm of all participants were truly remarkable.

BIOLOGY – Mr Leigh
Excitement filled the classrooms as we delved into the engaging topics across different year groups this term:
- In Year 7, our budding biologists began exploring the intricacies of Diet and the Digestive system. Through captivating practical demonstrations, they witnessed first-hand how the digestive system meticulously breaks down food for absorption. Additionally, the detrimental effects of an unhealthy diet on both physical and mental well-being were thoroughly examined, sparking insightful discussions amongst the students on how best to “eat healthily”.
- Moving on to Year 8, our young sleuths enthusiastically immersed themselves in cracking the intriguing case of Mr Southward’s murder! Drawing upon their acquired forensic techniques, students diligently pieced together evidence to identify the prime suspect. The climax unfolded as teams confidently presented their findings to the class, ultimately unravelling the identity of the perpetrator.
- Meanwhile, in Year 9, a deep dive into the organisation of the human body took place, focusing on the significance of various biological molecules and the pivotal role of enzymes. The students broadened their knowledge and honed their analytical skills through engaging discussions and practical demonstrations.
- Lastly, Year 10 students ventured outdoors to explore the abundance of plant life on our field using quadrats while also studying the intricate interactions within ecosystems. We covered important concepts such as competition and biodiversity, providing students with a holistic understanding of nature’s delicate balance.
CHEMISTRY – Mrs Poole
I am delighted to inform you about the remarkable progress our students have made in their Chemistry curriculum this term:
- Our Year 7 pupils have been thoroughly engaged with the captivating topic of metal reactivity. They have explored the reactions of metals with acids, water, and oxygen, showcasing exceptional understanding and enthusiasm. It has been an absolute pleasure to teach such dedicated and inquisitive learners.
- Meanwhile, our Year 8 students have been immersed in learning about atmospheric pollutants and the crucial issue of climate change. They have produced insightful pieces on the effects of these pollutants on our planet, demonstrating creativity and a deep concern for environmental issues.
- In addition, our Year 9 pupils have already covered two topics from the GCSE AQA syllabus, achieving fantastic scores in their end-of-year GCSE-style assessments. Their commitment to mastering challenging concepts is commendable, and I do not doubt they will continue to excel in their academic pursuits.
- Our Year 10 cohort recently completed a rigorous study on energy, dedicating themselves to grasping complex scientific principles with diligence and perseverance. I am immensely proud of their hard work and dedication.
I would like to express my gratitude to you for your unwavering support of your child’s education. Your encouragement and involvement play a significant role in their academic achievements. I encourage you to continue supporting and motivating them in their learning journey.
PHYSICS – Mr Thorn
As this term ends, I am excited to share our pupils’ progress and discoveries in physics. Here’s a snapshot of what each year group has been up to:
- Year 7 pupils have been exploring space, learning about our place in the Universe, the beautiful range of objects we see in the night sky, and the reasons behind daily and seasonal changes on Earth. They also studied the Moon’s phases, and rest assured, I can confirm that none of our year 7s are werewolves!
- Year 8 pupils reviewed electricity before diving into magnetism. They explored permanent magnets and the Earth’s magnetic properties and built their own electromagnets and motors. These hands-on projects provided insights into essential modern technologies.
- Year 9 focused on energy resources and the complexities of electricity. Energy resources seem to play an increasingly important role in the 21st century and are worth knowing about. In electricity, they tackled difficult topics like what causes current to flow, factors affecting the amount of current in a circuit, and trying to work out which letter is used for which quantity (with charge symbolised by the letter Q, obviously).
- Year 10 completed their paper 1 topics and moved on to forces, heading into Newton’s sphere of influence. They learned about his laws of motion, used vectors to understand forces on objects, and explored the concept of moments of forces, nature’s own clever trick for performing tasks more easily.
This term has been both challenging and rewarding for our pupils. Their enthusiasm and curiosity have been inspiring. As we look forward to the next term, I am excited to continue our journey through the fascinating world of physics.
Year 11 – The Science Department wishes our Year 11s the best of luck for results day. We were all delighted to see the confidence on some of their faces when they left the exam, knowing that they had done their best. They will all go on to great things in their next steps, and we are glad to have been even a small part of their journey.
ENGLISH – Mrs Christian and Mrs Riley

It has been another busy term for the English Department. We are very proud of the success of our pupils in the Young Writers Competitions, “Mission Catastrophe” and ” Through their Eyes”. Young Writers is a well-established competition that allows pupils to write creatively to a word limit and, if chosen, the chance to be published. Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 have produced some fabulous 100-word mini sagas and pieces of original poetry. We were delighted to hear that so many of our pupils successfully rose to the challenge, and their work was selected to be included for publication.

We have just completed our final writing competition for the term “Mission Chaos” and are eagerly awaiting the results. We hope the results will see more work from our pupils appear in their latest publications.
Our School Library
The library continues to grow in popularity, and it has been wonderful seeing so many of you relax with a good book. We have recently extended our range of fiction and nonfiction texts, including fresh, contemporary, and diverse works by popular authors aimed at teenage readers. We hope that you will enjoy reading them next term!

We are sad to say goodbye to Mrs Riley, who will leave us at the end of term to go on maternity leave. She will be replaced by Mrs Courtney Ward, who has visited the school to ensure a smooth transition. We look forward to welcoming her back to school in September.

Celebrating Junior Maths Challenge Winners
It’s been another good term for pupils in maths. At the start of the term, pupils in years 7 and 8 took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. The Maths Challenge presents pupils with problems they must use logic and reasoning to solve. Winners celebrated with cookies. Participating pupils were:

End-of-Year Assessments
Our end-of-year assessments have been a fantastic opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their learning, skills, and confidence in maths. Many pupils have achieved outstanding results, a testament to their hard work and dedication. Our successful pupils have consistently used Mathswatch to support their exam preparation and retention, making us incredibly proud of their achievements.
Graduation Day Awards
Graduation day was a moment of pride and celebration, where the effort, time, and resilience of our pupils were rewarded. Pupils received their Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze awards for their Mathswatch scores, recognizing the top four performing students in each class. It was a joyous occasion that highlighted their dedication and excellence.

Incredible Mathswatch Milestone
Throughout the year, our pupils collectively spent over 4,800 hours learning and completed over 140,000 questions on Mathswatch! This incredible milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support and encouragement from parents. A huge thank you to all parents; your involvement in your children’s homework makes a significant difference in their success.
Year 9 Adventure at The Crystal Maze
Towards the end of the term, our year 9 pupils, accompanied by Mr. Abbott, Mrs. King, Mr. Taylor, and Mr. Southward, had an unforgettable experience at The Crystal Maze in Manchester. They had an amazing time solving puzzles, navigating different maze zones, collecting crystals, and catching tokens in the dome. The pupils rose to the challenge, successfully solving various physical and mental problems. It was a brilliant way to apply their thinking and reasoning skills in a fun, practical setting. A big thank you to Mr. Abbott for organizing this fantastic event. We hope to return next year!
Upcoming GCSE Booster Sessions
Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that GCSE Booster sessions will begin for year 11 in September. Additionally, our weekly lunchtime intervention sessions will continue to be available for pupils in years 7 – 11. These sessions are designed to provide extra support and are open for pupils to drop in as needed, without the need for booking.
HISTORY – Mr Jack
Year 7 have concluded their studies of England in the Middle Ages. They investigated the ‘Peasants’ Revolt’ of 1381 and participated most enthusiastically in a decision-making activity, taking the role of one of the protesters on their way to meet the King. We have also looked briefly at England’s relations with Wales and Scotland during the reign of Edward I.
Year 8 concluded their studies of the American West and changes to Native Americans’ lives in the late 1800s. They then looked into the experiences and challenges of Native Americans today and their feelings towards those pivotal events in their history. This year group were then asked which topics they would like to study for the remainder of the year – Nazi Germany was a popular suggestion, linking to work that they have done relating to this topic in English lessons. We have investigated the range of problems facing Germany in the aftermath of the First World War, the rise of the Nazi party, and how Hitler tried and eventually succeeded in taking power. The pupils have contributed mature and thoughtful ideas on how this topic relates to democracy, civil rights and freedom of speech.
Year 9 have concluded their work on the 1920s ‘Boom’ of the USA. We have studied the downturn in the US economy leading to the 1929 Wall Street Crash, the onset of the Depression, and how this affected the American people. We have looked into how people reacted to the Depression and its effects on the government. We also studied the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1920s, its impact on African Americans, and how African Americans responded to those challenges.
Year 10 have completed the unit on the USA and are now into their GCSE studies of Elizabethan England. Our recent lessons have included poverty in England at the time, decisions over religion and marriage that Elizabeth I had to make, and the complicated issue of succession to the English throne at that time. We have been working hard up to the end of term so that we can pick up the course effectively at the beginning of Year 11.
CAREERS – Miss Riley
This Summer term, our Year 10 students embarked on incredible journeys to explore their interests and potential career paths. With enriching visits to the University of Liverpool Law Department and Carmel College, our students gained invaluable insights and experiences that are sure to shape their future aspirations.
University of Liverpool Law Department – At the University of Liverpool, students immersed themselves in the world of law and policies during Careers and Information Day. This interactive experience offered a captivating glimpse into the diverse opportunities available in higher education. Our students engaged with professionals in the field, asked insightful questions, and expanded their understanding of what a future in law could look like.
Carmel College Imagine Day – Simultaneously, at Carmel College, students took part in an Imagine Day, where they experienced college life firsthand. They dove into subjects they are passionate about, gaining a true sense of what studying these disciplines at an advanced level entails. This enlightening experience allowed students to envision their future academic and career paths, igniting a spark of excitement for the possibilities ahead.
These two enriching events have undoubtedly ignited a sense of curiosity and ambition in our Year 10 students. We are excited to see how these experiences will influence their journeys towards success and fulfilment.
ART – Miss Carr
In Art, our pupils have been exploring various media and topics throughout the year, including the vibrant Day of the Dead, intriguing Surrealism, and much more. These projects have provided them with ample opportunities for self-expression, resulting in some truly stunning artwork.
Year 7 students recently completed their study of culture, focusing on the artist Roger Djiguemde. They explored African patterns and created an impressive sketchbook page showcasing their mastery of tone and composition. For their final piece, they produced an artist’s copy using coloured pencils, refining their work with fine liners to achieve remarkable detail.

Year 8 students took their creativity to new heights by crafting 3D clay models for their Day of the Dead sculptures. They studied facial proportions and mapped out facial structures for their designs, which they then enhanced with acrylic paints and additional materials to add unique features.

Year 9 students have been immersed in the world of Salvador Dali and the art of surrealism. They have produced multiple artworks using various media, demonstrating their skills and creativity. Their experiments with backgrounds culminated in a final piece inspired by the renowned artist.

Year 10 students have been finalising their mini-topic projects, showcasing various skills and techniques, including clay modelling, lino printing, and fashion design. In September, they will embark on a new topic focused on natural forms, where they will experiment with resin to create stunning crystal resin artwork.

We are incredibly proud of all our pupils’ artistic growth and accomplishments and look forward to seeing their continued creativity flourish.
MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES – Mrs Turner & Miss Riley
The languages department has enjoyed a fantastic term. We have seen some incredible end-of-year test results and are impressed with the effort our young people have put into their work.
This term, we have ventured into our favourite topic, ‘las fiestas.’ There are so many fun and crazy festivals that take place in Spain and Latin America. We have been closely following the San Fermin bull run, which has just taken place, and looked at La Tomatina and even the El Colacho festival in Northern Spain, where they jump over babies! As well as being fun to learn about, these events also appear on the GCSE specification.
A real highlight of this year has been our trips to Spain and France. It has been fabulous to see our young people enjoying different cultures and foods, seeing famous landmarks, and attempting to use their language skills in real-life situations!
We spent five days in Spain on the beautiful Costa Brava, learning how to sail catamarans and kayaks and even go on a giant SUP. The weather was scorching for the time of year, and spending our days at the beach was idyllic. We were hugely impressed by the willingness of pupils to get involved – many of whom overcame their fears to do such activities. The water sports coaches commented that Tower College pupils were fun, polite and tried their best. We also had the chance to visit the stunning city of Barcelona and even paid a visit to the Nou Camp. Everyone behaved in an exemplary manner and represented the school well. We look forward to returning shortly.
As the academic year draws to a close, we must celebrate our first full year of teaching French to our Year 7 pupils. This has been a real success, and seeing pupils become dual linguists has been truly inspiring. It was great to hear pupils using their new language skills on our recent trip to Paris.
We have developed language and cultural knowledge in French enrichment classes, including lessons on some of France’s most famous artistic movements. The course ended with a fabulous French feast. Well done to all those who were brave enough to sample the French cheese!
Lower school students have excelled in their language lessons, and it is inspiring to see learners from Tower Tots upwards engaged in languages. Most recently, we have studied the topic of weather.

GEOGRAPHY – Mrs Griffiths & Mr Taylor
As the academic year draws to a close, we are thrilled to reflect on our pupils’ diverse and enriching experiences in Geography. Here is a glimpse into the exciting topics each year group has explored:
Year 7: Global Challenges and Geographic Exploration
Our Year 7 pupils have embarked on an adventurous journey studying the challenges faced in various locations worldwide. They delved into the geographical challenges of Las Vegas. They investigated the formidable task of climbing Mt Everest, adopting different characters to understand the impacts of tourism growth on the mountain.
Furthermore, pupils expanded their locational knowledge and deepened their spatial awareness of the world’s countries, focusing on Africa. Using maps, they explored environmental regions, including hot deserts, key physical and human characteristics, countries, and significant cities. This unit was particularly enlightening, challenging misconceptions about Africa and exploring the continent’s history and natural resources. Each pupil chose an African country to investigate, culminating in detailed presentations that showcased their newfound understanding.
Year 8: Understanding Global Development
Year 8 pupils have been analysing the development of various countries, comparing economic, social, and political progress globally. This comparative study highlighted factors contributing to prosperity, such as governance, education, infrastructure, and healthcare. By understanding development disparities, pupils recognised the root causes of inequality.
Pupils explored effective ways to measure development and compare different strategies. They also studied the importance of development goals, understanding their purpose in reducing world poverty. Each pupil selected an important development goal and created a persuasive advert advocating for achieving that goal.
Year 9: Investigating Tropical Storms
In Year 9, pupils have focused on tropical storms, their causes, effects, and responses. A detailed Typhoon Haiyan case study allowed pupils to assess the importance of prediction, prevention, and preparation for such natural disasters. This in-depth investigation provided valuable insights into the devastating impacts of tropical storms and the critical measures needed to mitigate their effects.
Year 10: Urban Growth in LICs and NEEs
Year 10 pupils have been studying the complexities of urban growth, particularly in Low-Income Countries (LICs) and Newly Emerging Economies (NEEs). Focusing on Rio De Janeiro, they examined the city’s regional, national, and international significance. Pupils explored the causes of growth, including natural increase and migration, and how this urban expansion has created opportunities and challenges.
The curriculum covered various aspects, including access to services, health and education, water supply, and energy resources. Pupils investigated the economic benefits of urban industrial areas and the challenges of managing urban growth, including slums, sanitation systems, and environmental issues like waste disposal and traffic congestion. They also studied urban planning initiatives to improve the quality of life for the urban poor.

COMPUTING – Mr Glover, Mr Brown & Mr Thorn

As we approach the end of the academic year, it’s a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our pupils’ remarkable progress in Computing. Their dedication and enthusiasm have been truly inspiring, and we are excited about the journey ahead as they continue to deepen their understanding and skills in this ever-evolving field.
Year 7 -In the computer science department, pupils have used Scratch to recreate retro video games from the 1970s, including Pong and Breakout. Following this, they advanced to designing and coding their video games in MakeCode Arcade, creating their pixel art sprites and backdrops. An exciting feature of this project is that pupils can download their video games onto small handheld gaming devices that resemble Gameboys!

Year 8 – As the school year ends, I am thrilled to reflect on the significant progress our Year 8 pupils have shown in computing. This year, we covered a wide range of topics:
- Microsoft Excel and Spreadsheets: Pupils mastered data manipulation, formulas, and chart creation, laying a solid foundation for more complex topics in an area with substantial career opportunities.
- Architecture of Computing Systems: We explored hardware components, understanding how processors, memory, and storage interact. Pupils also got experience with logic gates, gaining insights into computers’ fundamental operations.
- Binary and Information Representation: Pupils learned about the core language of computers, understanding how to convert between our number system and the one understood by machines.
- Introduction to Python: Python, one of the world’s most powerful programming languages, was introduced, allowing pupils to showcase their creativity through various projects. Highlights included a pupil creating their chatbot and another developing an impressive times table game.
Over the summer, I encourage pupils to practice programming using Trinket, a Python platform, to prepare for GCSE Computer Science with Mr. Glover next year. Teaching such a talented group has been a pleasure, and I wish them all the best in Year 9. I also look forward to welcoming the new Year 8 cohort!
Year 9 – Our Year 9 pupils have laid a solid foundation in preparation for their GCSE studies and future careers in the tech industry. This year, they embarked on an exciting journey, diving into:
- Ethical, Legal, and Environmental Impact of Technology: This topic helped pupils appreciate the broader implications of technology on society. They discussed and debated issues such as data privacy, digital rights, and the environmental impact of e-waste, fostering a sense of responsibility as future technologists.
- Python Programming: Pupils learned the basics of Python, one of the world’s most widely used programming languages. They tackled various coding challenges, developed their problem-solving skills and gained a firm grasp of programming concepts.
- Hardware and Software: It is crucial to understand the physical components of computers and the software that runs on them. Pupils explored the inner workings of computers, learning about different types of hardware and their roles, as well as how software is developed and used.
Next year, as they move into Year 10, our pupils will continue with the GCSE curriculum, diving deeper into:
- Computer Networks: Students will explore how computers communicate with each other and learn about the structure and functioning of various networks.
- Advanced Python Programming: Applying their programming knowledge to more complex scenarios and written examinations, pupils will enhance their coding skills and analytical thinking.
Year 10
Our Year 10 pupils have shown incredible resilience and perseverance, making substantial progress through the GCSE content. This year, they focused on:
- Network Programming: A key study area was to understand how data is transferred across networks and the protocols involved. Pupils learned to program networked applications, fostering a practical understanding of real-world networking.
- Relational Databases: Pupils delved into the world of databases, learning to create, manage, and query databases using SQL. This skill is essential for handling large amounts of data efficiently.
- Logical Reasoning: Through various exercises and projects, pupils honed their critical thinking and logical reasoning. They practised breaking down complex problems and developing step-by-step solutions, a vital computing skill.
Looking ahead to their final year, our Year 10 pupils will complete their studies in:
- Data Representation: Understanding how computer data is represented, including binary and hexadecimal systems.
- Computer Systems: A comprehensive look at how computer systems operate, including the hardware, software, and processes involved.
We encourage our Year 10 pupils to engage with the programming challenges available on Epraise over the summer to maintain their momentum. These challenges are designed to keep their skills sharp and prepare them for the upcoming academic year.
Looking Forward
Our pupils have demonstrated exceptional growth and capability in Computing. As they continue their studies, they are well on their way to becoming proficient and responsible technologists, ready to tackle the challenges of the future.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION – Mrs Griffiths, Mr Jack and Mr Taylor
Religious Education plays a pivotal role in shaping well-rounded, empathetic individuals. This term, our pupils have delved into various topics, enhancing their knowledge and critical thinking skills while reflecting on the relevance of religious teachings in modern society.
Year 7: The Life of Jesus
Year 7 pupils have worked exceptionally hard on their Religious Education studies this term. They have explored the life of Jesus in-depth, examining different Bible stories with a keen sense of inquiry and reflection. Their studies have allowed them to understand how Christianity can guide individuals in distinguishing between right and wrong, encouraging them to become well-rounded citizens. By applying the lessons from Jesus’s life to contemporary issues, Year 7 pupils have demonstrated a remarkable ability to connect ancient teachings with modern life.
Year 8: Inspirational Figures – Father Damien
Year 8 pupils have completed an insightful study of inspirational figures, focusing on the life and work of Father Damien. They explored how Father Damien dedicated himself to caring for leprosy sufferers in Hawaii in the 1800s, significantly improving their lives. Through this study, pupils learned about compassion, selflessness, and one individual’s impact on a community. Father Damien’s story has inspired Year 8 to consider the importance of service to others and the difference it can make in the world.
Year 9: Christian Practices
